Foods to Prevent Migraines

At some point in your life you have probably experienced a bad headache, one so bad that you have trouble functioning in your day to day life. You might even get them frequently, like a few times a week.

What can you do when you experience them? With migraines there are a few different ways you can go about treating them.  For instance, doctors may prescribe certain medications such as Alsuma, Maxalt, Relpax, Zomig, Zomig-ZMT, and even Botox, which was specifically found to block neurotransmitters before they reach nerve endings around your head and neck, causing a migraine. If you only have them once every few months then you can get some over the counter medicine, but if you get them several times a week, then you might want to try something known as the migraine diet:

1. Grains, breads, and cereals

When it comes to a migraine diet there are several different foods that can not only help with migraines, but can prevent them as well. When you feel a migraine coming, one of the foods you want to be reaching for is either grains, breads, or cereals. Most of your cereals will help with migraines (with the exception of the ones with nuts). Things like bagels, with or without sesame seeds, and quick breads are a couple other things you can reach for. Unflavored crackers, like saltines and club crackers, are also good choices.

2. Lean meats

When it comes to meat, you want to eat things like fresh beef, fish, chicken, lamb, veal, or turkey because they have shown time and time again that they actually help with migraines.

3. Pumpkin seeds

Also things like pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, naturally flavored sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds have shown to help with migraines time and time again.

4. Avoidance foods

With all these foods that will actually help your migraine status, there are several foods that you need to stay away from simply because they tend to either trigger a migraine or they can make one worse. Foods like flavored crackers, pizza that is made with fresh bread, fresh bread in general, and soft pretzels have been shown to make migraines much worse. Just like with bread, there are certain meats that you should stay away from, such as beef and chicken livers tend to make migraines worse. Along with these, you should avoid things like flavored popcorn, breaded meats, nut butters, and marinated meats.
