Foods to Avoid on the Keto Diet

Keto is one of the most popular fad diets in the world right now. In the past, people generally cut calories and exercised for weight loss, however, with the introduction of low carb diets, such as the ketogenic diet, Whole30, and Atkins, participants began cutting calories specifically via eliminating carbohydrates from the daily diet. The rules of keto focus on low carb, high protein, and high fat foods.

Cutting your carb intake below 20 carbs per day puts the body into a state of ketosis, causing your body to burn fat versus carbohydrates for energy. To follow keto successfully, there are certain foods you should avoid:

1. Soda
You should avoid pop or soda that contains sugar at all costs while on keto. A 20 ounce Pepsi alone includes 41 grams of sugar and carbohydrates each. That is a big eye-opener. Just imagine how many grams of sugar and carbs you intake daily, not doing keto. Instead, you should drink lots of water and black coffee. They are both sugar, carb, and calorie-free. If you still have a taste for soda, it is okay to drink diet soda, since it is still sugar-free and includes aspartame for the sugar substitute.

2. Pasta
You should also avoid pasta while doing keto. An 8-ounce bowl of pasta has 56 grams of carbs; this will surely kick you out of ketosis. Instead, cauliflower is a perfect alternative to pasta since it is lower in carbs. There are many ways to make pasta dishes with cauliflower, which tastes just as amazing or even better.

3. Traditional breads
Bread is high in carbs as well. There are 32 carbs in 2 slices of white bread; this is way too high for a ketogenic diet. An excellent substitute is cloud bread. It only contains egg whites and seasoning. Since there is less than 1 gram of carbs in an egg, this is a terrific way to eat bread that is low in carbs as opposed to traditional bread.

4. Snack foods
Junk food such as candy and chips are terrible for any diet, especially a ketogenic diet. Candy contains an enormous amount of sugar and carbs. A 1.74-ounce bag of Peanut M&Ms includes 30 grams of carbohydrates and 25 grams of sugar. There are 16 carbs in only 11 Doritos; imagine how many carbs you would be intaking if you ate the whole bag or even half. Beef jerky and pork rinds are delicious keto snacks that will keep your carb count down.

These are some of the main foods you should avoid on the keto diet. Keto is trending right now all over the globe, and many people who’ve adopted the keto don’t even consider it a diet at all; they call it a way of life.
