Foods for Prostate Cancer
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are approximately 1.3 million cases worldwide of prostate cancer each year. Of men’s cancers, it’s the most common. This is especially true of men’s cancers affecting those over 65-years of age. Many steps, including regular screenings, help with prostate cancer prevention. A healthy diet also helps lower the risk. Consider today the following options for prostate cancer diet that help mitigate the chances of the cancer developing in the first place:
1. Try that tofu
Tofu does not have to freak you out. Don’t let unfamiliarity discourage you from trying it. A diet that limits meat, especially red meat, reduces chances for prostate cancer development. Tofu can be used in many ways (i.e., sauces, baking, stir fries). You might just be surprised by how much you like it.
2. Serve up salmon
Salmon, although a meat, is not as unhealthy as red meat and processed meats. It is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which help with inflammation. Thankfully, inflammation can be naturally reduced with the help of anti-inflammatory foods, which in turn helps reduce the risk of cancer cell development. According to Medical News Today, other cold water fish can be beneficial too (i.e., tuna, herring, trout, or mackerel). If the market is out of salmon, grab some trout or tuna.
3. Boost energy with coffee
Drinking coffee will do more than just help you get through the day. According to Harvard University, it may also lower your chances of developing prostate cancer. Coffee reduces inflammation, controls insulin, and is packed with antioxidants, all of which lower the chances for the cancer emerging.
4. Toss in tomatoes.
Tomatoes, according to the BBC, can reduce the chances for colon cancer by as much as 20 percent. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is full of antioxidants. Toss those tomatoes into the salad next time. They are better there, than being tossed off of your plate.
5. Chow down on cruciferous vegetables.
Cruciferous vegetables are green leafy vegetables. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale are all types of cruciferous vegetables. Make sure that you get plenty of these vegetables daily. The Prostate Cancer Foundation says that daily consumption can kill the cancer and stop it from forming.
